Prof Adrian Porch：
He has 33 years of research experience in the fundamental properties, electromagnetic modelling and applications of materials at microwave frequencies. He is a champion of interdisciplinary research, with research interactions across all of the physical sciences. In recent years his research has expanded into the area of medical microwave devices. In other relevant projects he is investigating the separate effects of pulsed microwave electric and magnetic fields on cells and organisms (Welsh Government’s National Research Networks and Sêr Cymru Fellowship Programme), and collaborating with the University of Sheffield on the use of microwave sensors for predicting pre-term birth based on tissue hydration.
Dr Roberto Quaglia：
He is a Lecturer in the School of Engineering. His research focuses on high frequency power amplifiers. He have published around 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers, of which more than 25 on international scientific journals, and he is also co-author of a book on Microwave Backhaul .He is year tutor for the MsC courses related to Microwave and Wireless technologies. He teaches MsC modules on advanced microwave techniques, and first year modules on Digital Electronics.
Dr Ze Ji：
He has held multiple positions as a robotics and autonomous systems researcher and engineer in both academia and industry (Dyson, Lenovo, and Autonomous Surface Vehicles). His PhD was sponsored as part of the EU FP6 project, TAI- CHI (Tangible Acoustic Interfaces for Computer Human Interaction), which won the best exhibit prize of EU FP6 exhibition in Helsinki, Finland, in 2006. He has very broad experience in robotics, including indoor mobile robots, humanoid robots, and outdoor unmanned autonomous surface vehicles. In particular, he has been focusing on research areas of simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM), computer vision, situational awareness, acoustic and tactile sensing, machine learning, swarm intelligence, robot task planning and knowledge representation.
Prof Khaled Elgaid：
Dr. K Elgaid FIET, SIEEE, is presently leading a high frequency devices and integrated circuits research team using GaN technology. He has >140 publications, presented 5 invited talks in international conferences/workshops in the past 2 years and co-authored a book chapter in “RFIC and MMIC design and technology”; widely regarded as a reference text, translated into Chinese in 2007. He has >20 years’ experience in MMIC technology development operating up to 325GHz, i.e. world leading mHEMT performance (fT/fmax = 440/400 GHz), InP HEMT performance (fT 550GHz), highest reported 300nm T-gate RF GaN on LR Si HEMT (fT/fmax = 55/121 GHz), demonstrated UK only 200GHz MMIC LNA, Ka-Band diode based MMIC mixers/LNA and state of the art MMIC compatible integrated THz antennas technology. He has collaborated with world leading national/international industrial partners (e.g. QinetiQ, BAE Systems, DTC and Keysight).
Prof Johannes Benedikt：
Johannes Benedikt received the Dipl.-Ing. Degree in electrical engineering from the University of Ulm, Germany in 1997 and shortly after he started a PhD course at Cardiff University. During his PhD project he developed a ￡0.5M research project with Nokia on RF power amplifiers and took on the position of senior research associate at Cardiff University starting at October 2000. He was awarded a PhD degree in 2002 and was appointed as a Lecturer in 2004 and a Senior Lecturer from August 2009. Following his success in research and engagement activities with industry he was awarded a personal chair in May 2010.He has a strong industrial background which he acquired in the last 10 years working together with DaimlerChrysler, Siemens, Robert Bosch, Nokia, Agilent, and Tektronix. His industrial involvement and inventiveness is underlined by three internationally granted patents, all submitted during his work with Cardiff University.
Dr Jonathan Lees：
He began hie career in 1998 developing optical and GPS-based positional tracking solutions with QinetiQ, U.K. He became a chartered Engineer in 1999 and obtained his MSc. and PhD. degrees from Cardiff University in 2002 and 2006 respectively. He is currently employed as a Senior Lecturer in Non-Linear Microwave Characterisation within Cardiff University’s Centre for High Frequency Engineering (CHFE) where his key research areas are linear-efficient PA design and microwave characterisation with a specific interest in the design and optimisation of High-Efficiency Power Amplifiers. His work in this area includes the first published GaN Doherty amplifier, and more recently, activities considering the development of novel high-power, broad-band time-domain measurement and load-pull techniques that directly address the current and future needs of modern communication systems. His recent research activities include investigation into RF properties of materials, microwave heating and disruption and application of microwave engineering to healthcare diagnostics.
Prof Gao Min：
Gao Min is a Professor of Energy Materials and Head of Thermoelectric Laboratory. He obtained BSc in Semiconductor Physics from Xidian University, China and PhD under supervision of Professor D M Rowe in Thermoelectrics at Cardiff University UK. His main research interests focus on fundamental understanding of thermoelectric processes for energy harvesting applications. He is a Board Member of European Thermoelectric Society and also serves as an expert evaluator for H2020, DOE (USA), NSF (USA), NWO (NL), DFF (DK), NSF (CN) and EPSRC (UK) on energy materials, promoting truly excellent research in thermoelectrics and related energy materials.He has over 25-year experience in thermoelectric research.
Prof Jianzhong Wu：
Prof. Wu researches on Smart Grid and energy infrastructure (modelling, analysis and optimisation of integrated smart energy supply networks). He has contributed to more than 40 EU, EPSRC and industry funded projects as a Principal Investigator or a Co-Investigator. Particularly he was the deputy leader of the Multi-Energy Theme of EPSRC HubNet, Principal Investigator of projects on dynamic demand funded by National Grid, Toshiba and OPEN ENERGI, and the Cardiff Principal Investigator of an EU Horizon 2020 projects on “Peer to Peer Smart Energy Distribution Networks” and “MAGNITUDE”. He is a co-Principal Investigator of ￡24m WEFO funded FLEXIS project investing future energy systems and co-I of a ￡5m EPSRC project on Multi-Scale Infrastructure Systems Analytics.
Dr Chris Yang：
His research area includes acoustofluidics and medical ultrasound. His lab is mainly focusing on the development of novel sensors for point-of-care cancer early diagnostics by separating tumour biomarkers from body fluids. His projects have been funded by the EPSRC, the Royal Society, Wellcome Trust, Global Challenges Research Fund and Cardiff University. He was also awarded a number of industrial and seedcorn funding on the projects in sensor development. He has published papers in high-impact journals in the research of ultrasound and microfluidics; he has also published eight books in the subject of electronics and microcontrollers as the principal authors.
Dr Ying Liu：
Determined to experience different research cultures and pursue his career, Dr. Liu joined Cardiff University as a Senior Lecturer with the Institute of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the School of Engineering in July 2013. He obtained his Bachelor and Master both in Mechanical Engineering from Chongqing University, China in 1998 and 2001, and then M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Innovation in Manufacturing Systems and Technology (IMST) program under the Singapore MIT Alliance (SMA) at Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore in 2002 and 2006 respectively. In Dec 2006, he went to teach with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, first as a Lecturer and then an Assistant Professor. From Aug 2010, Dr. Liu joined Mechanical Engineering with the National University of Singapore as an Assistant Professor until his tenure ended in Jun 2013.
